BenQ RL2455HM Review

benq-rl2455hm-24-led-fullhd-60hz-2The Good: Really, really good price for all the features it’s got. It’s among the best gaming monitors on the market and surprisingly is one of the most affordable.

The Bad: It only has a refresh rate of 60hz.

The Bottom Line: It’s good monitor for RTS gamers, but not so good for fast-action games like FPS (see the XL2720Z instead).

Design

BenQ is known for their beautifully designed monitors. Specially the gaming line (XL & RL Series). This particular model comes in a beautiful black frame with highlights in red and sharp edges that give the RL2455HM an aggressive look, and we love that.

The buttons of this model are located on the right hand side of the monitor and they feel really solidly built.

Accessories

This monitor doesn’t come with a lot of accesories, BenQ just included the necessary stuff.

  • Power Chord
  • DVI Cable
  • VGA Cable
  • Quick-Start guide

As you can see there’s no HDMI cable in there, it would be nice if they had included it instead of the VGA cable because hey, this is a gaming monitor and no one uses VGA for gaming anymore.

Features

Like all the gaming monitors made by BenQ, this one doesn’t lack of useful gaming features and technologies. I like BenQ over the rest of the brands because they really make an effort to improve your gaming sessions instead of adding useless gimmicks to your monitor for marketing purposes.

Among a long list of features, the most useful ones for gaming this monitor includes, are the following:

  • Black eQualizer – A dark scene in your game can make you lose your game due to the poor visibility. But fortunately, this is not a problem for this monitor because Black eQualizer works by balancing and controlling the black levels of your game scenes, making dark scenes more bright without compromising the bright areas, preserving vital details. This feature can help you spot your enemy easier and act faster to win the battle!
  • RTS Modes – This monitor was made with RTS gamers in mind, so its default out-of-the-box settings works brilliantly on any RTS games, but they went a step further and added two RTS modes, one for StarCraft II and another one for Dota II.
  • Flickr-free – This technology works by eliminating flickering on your screen at all brightness levels thus reducing the fatigue in your eyes herewith providing extreme comfort even after long hours of gaming sessions.

Viewing Angles

This monitor is based on a TN Panel, and as we’ve told you before, TN panels are widely known for their poor viewing angles but in spite of that, the viewing angles of this monitor are not that bad, we were actually impressed with the viewing angles of this little monster.

Is It Good For Gaming?

Hell yes! If you’re a RTS gamer, then this is a definitely one of the best monitors to buy. BenQ really did a good job with this monitor, it’s relatively cheap, beautifully designed, and it’s packed with a bunch of really useful features that takes your gaming to a whole new level.

Conclusion

Like we said above, this is an absolutely wonderful monitor. It’s aimed to RTS gamer (like all the RL Series models are), and it’s definitely the best monitor out there for RTS and casual gaming. But if you prefer FPS games, then this model won’t be the appropriate for you because it’s only got 60hz, so the fast actions/moves of a FPS game can, and will cause, undesired blurriness (also known as ghosting).
